Surgery date is confirmed

Yes! After a huge woohaa on the kiv postponing of the op date by prof vasala, they finally decided to proceed with the surgery as planned. What a huge relief... And my application for financial assistance is also approved by the medical social worker. So from now on, the fees after subsidies from the government, there is still an additional 80% subsidy from the medifund. So for yesterday psy appointment at Nuh, I only paid $6 for the consultation fee. Of course, if they have approved it earlier, I will be able to save more than 1-2k on the pre op investigations charges though. Watever, better than nothing right.
Yesterday psy appointment is quite interesting o, it is actually a standard protocol for all donors to go through a psy assessment to deem whether they are fit to consent to the surgery, not because I have any mental problems ( in case you are wondering). The psy dr asked me a lot of questions and even tested my short term and long term memory. I still remember the 3 words apple table pen. ( I am quite afraid that I will forget n keep repeating it in my mind while the dr continue to ask tons of questions) the dr is very nice n friendly though, so the assessment went very smoothly n of course, I am deemed fit for the consent of the surgery. Now I am only left with the ethics meeting on my birthday, a appt with my surgeon dr tiong cos he haven decided on which kidney to take yet, an appt with a independent kidney dr and a dentist. I hated dentist all my life, hope that he won't force me to extract my left embedded wisdom tooth pre op... Cos there a tini winy decaying part in the embedded portion. Lol.

I missed my babies +++ cos they are now staying at my mum's place from mon to sat as I am working. So here are 2 cute pics of them.

Cosplay costume tutorial part 2-obi

Today I will be covering on the obi sash which is super easy peasy. Materials u need:
Dark blue poplin 1m
Interfacing (I prefer iron on type cos of laziness;p)
The measurements for the sash will be your waist measurement plus 10-20 cm more for closure allowance for the length and 18-20 cm depending on yr preference for the width. Cut this rectangle on fold so that will make it double layer n iron on the interfacings. For the interfacing u can use light weight to medium weight. If you used interfacings that is too stiff, the obi sash will not look n fit nicely on, n avoid papery types as that will cause ugly paper crease on the sash as well.
Next, sew along the seam allowances along the length and turn the wrong sides in forming a tube shape. Next, fold the width sides seam allowances in, press and sew.
Now for the gathers, you can use the remnant fabric n cut into strips of 8 cms (seam allowance of 2 cm included) fold the strips lengthwise n press. Hem the raw edges n baste 2 rows of stitches within the seam allowance of the raw edges. Pull the 2 top stitches to gather the strips. Adjust the gathers n spread them evenly. Then u can sew the gathers to the main sash. The base is done. You can either finish the closure using Velcro or snaps. And paint on the white designs on the sash. I have cut out the white dress pattern pcs n will touch on it I'm tml tutorial post. Keep a look out for them n hope all this info helps. Do pardon mi for the limited pics cos I actually blogs using my iPhone. Not much functions available for iPhone blogging apps. Any queries feel free to email me;) n do help mi click on my google ads! I am 3/4 of the way to receiving my next cheque payment! Thanks in advance!

Female sewing magazine summer 2012 review

Popped by kinokuniya orchard after yesterday work and yeah! Managed to grab hold of this magazine n the July issue of burda style magazine as well.
And as usual I just dun have the patience to wait till I reached home to read through them. I immediately started flipping through both the magazines on the mrt even though it was during the peak hour, no sits available n got to stand n squeeze in the crowd all the way back to yishun... I made a promise to myself to at least make 2 items from each magazine brought so as to make the money worthwhile.
This month issue of the gap sewing magazines got quite a few interesting and cute patterns;) really worth the money and it's really cheap compared to other sewing books n magazines. Only sgd 11.33! Below are some of the snapshots of the clothing patterns which I am interested to sew. They got the peplum skirts and peterpan collar dresses n sweet blouses designs. Kino still have some more magazines left on shelf so if you wanna get one too, faster make a trip to kino orchard and grab yours before it's too late.

Cosplay costume sewing tutorial- armsleeves

Hmm, got this tailoring order for a customer;) not sure what is the name of this character though. ( my anime knowledge is super limited) anyone who knows can tell mi? Thanks in advance;)
Today I will be touching on the armsleeves part which takes around 30 mins to complete.

Items u need:
1: blue cotton in the right tone around 2m.
2: blue thread
3: blue ribbons (mine is 15mm)
4: button hole function in your sewing machine
First you need to draw out the pattern for the sleeves. I just estimate n draw directly onto the fabric and cut them out.
2: hem the upper sleeve portion.
3: sew buttonholes the length same as the width of your ribbon. The markings are 1inch ,1/2inch, 1inch, 1/2inch all around about 1.5inch from the upper hem.
4: sew the back seams, bottom seams and front seams till 20cm from the folded portion.
5: serge or neaten the raw edges
6: fold in the sleeve opening seams n sew.
7: add blue lace to the upper hem and the big round thing to the bottom of the sleeve and thread the ribbon through the buttonholes. tada! All done. (I haven buy the lace n do the round thing yet, will put them up when I got them)

Beary cute peterpan collar blouse tutorial

Hihi, as promised the instructions for drawing of the blouse pattern. You will need 8 pcs of patterns for this blouse. Follow the measurements as shown in the images to draw out your pattern pcs. They come in 4 sizes s,m,l and xl. No 1 is the back bodice on fold. No 2 is the front bodice. No 3 is the button down portion on fold as well. No 4 is the sleeve pattern but long sleeve version, u need to follow the instructions in the second sleeve pic to cut down to the shorter sleeve version. No 7 is the pattern for the collar. And you will need ribbon a n ribbon b for the bow and the other rectangle for the sleeve detail.
Cut out the fabrics according and for no 3 n no 7, u need to cut out the interfacing as well;)

Fabrics required 110cm width- 2m
Buttons 14mm 6

Steps for construction of the blouse:
1: iron on the interfacings accordingly.
2: construct the Peter pan collar.
3: sew the front bodice dart.
4: sew the sleeves detail onto the designated area.
5: construct the sleeves by gathering the top portion, sew the sleeves sides together n hem the sleeves.
6: sew the sides n shoulders seams together n the button down pcs as well.
7: sew the Peter pan collar to the neckline. Using a 2cm bias tape to neaten the collar seams.
8: hem the blouse.
9: construct the ribbon bow n sew to the sleeve detail. Tada! U r done with this cutie blouse!

Feel free to email me at wu_hui_mei@hotmail.com for any questions and help with this pattern;)

So left or right kidney?

Just talked to the surgeon for the coming transplant today. Dr Tiong HY. He seems like a really nice guy and I think i once worked with him before in Mot a few years back.
He was showing me my ct angiogram scans and analyzing which kidney is more suitable for donation. As usual, being quite an abnormal person, my kidneys are also quite abnormal. Let tok about the normal case. For kidneys donor, the surgeons usually remove the left kidneys as the blood vessels attaching to the kidneys from the main blood vessels are longer. And usually there will only be 1 artery 1 vein and 1 ureter connecting to the kidney. A straightforward case like this, the surgeons will be able to perform a laparoscopic method of extracting the kidney making the recovery time to be faster n of course, less pain. And in my abnormal case, my left kidneys have 3 or more bld vessels attached to it. This means that there will be more anastomosis work to be done by the surgeon and making the surgery more complicated. Another option is to use my right kidney which is more normal, but due to the bld vessels being shorter n closer to the main vessels, they can only perform a open surgery to remove the kidney, in the process they also need to remove my 12th right rib.
Sigh, why my body seems to have extra stuff in it? Can't it be more normal? Dr tiong said he need more time and discussion with the radiographers before he can decide on which kidney. I really hope that the laparoscopic way can work out, cos I have super low pain tolerance. Now I can only wait for the verdict to be out...

Ps: a pic of me n my 2 baobeis to cheer me up;)

Thoughts on being a live donor

My mum had been suffering from partial kidneys failure since a few yrs back, her condition had been under control with medications and regular follow up. But this yr early April, one month after I delivered my second son, baby Allen, my mummy finally broke the news that she will be needing dialysis soon as the doctors have informed her that her kidneys have deteriorated badly and heading towards complete failure... As a nurse who had experienced working in Nuh major Ot and even assisted in kidneys transplant before, I consoled her and volunteered to donate one of my kidneys to her.
Kidneys transplant surgery seems very common during my working days and is considered so much more simpler than liver transplant thus I had not much second thoughts on this. So we headed to the transplant office one day and requested for the kidney transplant . That day the assistant director of the transplant team talked to us. We are super concerned about the financial issues regarding the transplant procedure cos we are just an average family, earning just enough for everyday life without much savings. the assistant director reassures us that we do not need to worry about the financial issue at all as we can claim the surgical fee from medisave and the fee will also be highly subsidized by the government if we are looking to c class. We felt so much better after that and decided to go ahead. What comes after that got worse though, after each session we found out that there are more and more hidden costs. All the preop checks for the donor and recipient costs at least 3-4k and becos is done as outpt, we got to fork out full cash for them. For me alone, I had to do so many blood tests, chest xray, ECG, ct angiogram, blah blah blah. Every session they need to either set iv cannulation for me or draw my blood. The record is 11 tubes of blood drawn in a single day. I got the giddy spells after that. They need me to see a psy, tis doctor that doctor and even a dentist before we can do the surgery. I hated the dentist;( they always give me the hair standing sensation with their zzz equipments.
My mum got very upset because of all the charges and tests we need to go through till the point of giving up on the transplant. Sigh, wat can we do? No matter how much is the cost, her life is priceless. Although the transplant costs a bomb and is causing a strain on us, it is much more better than her having to go through dialysis thrice a wk, and going through dialysis can enlarge the heart and cause cardiac problem in the long run even. If I am suitable after all these checks and we proceed with the surgery, she has a chance to lead a normal life again and watch her grandsons grow up. So why not? What do u all think? Dialysis or transplant will be better?

Ps: I am having phobia of needles now due to all the poking pre op checks;( jiayou to me! And hope the everything will go smoothly... Ohya and big thank you to my darling husband who supported my decision all this while. Loveya!
